Our Story

My name is Jemma, and my journey with The Rural Plate Project began not with a grand plan, but from a place of personal challenge. A once-thriving career was cut short by chronic health issues and disability. This unexpected turn left me feeling adrift, both financially and emotionally. It was during this difficult period that I found solace and renewed purpose by volunteering at a local food pantry.

Witnessing firsthand the struggles of families in rural areas, individuals are often overlooked, and their difficulty in accessing basic nutrition ignited a new calling. I realised the profound need for accessible, affordable food in these underserved communities. This experience became the catalyst for creating a mobile community pantry, bringing essential groceries directly to those who need them most. It’s a way to channel my experiences, skills, and empathy into creating a tangible difference in people's lives.

At the core of The Rural Plate Project are the values of empathy, community, and sustainability. We believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious food, and we are dedicated to serving those who face challenges in obtaining it. Our work is driven by a desire to connect with and support our communities, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual aid.

By redistributing surplus food, we contribute to a more sustainable food system, tackling waste while nourishing people.
