Our Story

Discover the heart behind The Rural Plate Project. Learn about our beginnings, our driving purpose, and how a personal journey led to a mission of community support.

From personal hardship to shared purpose

My name is Jemma, and my journey with The Rural Plate Project began not with a grand plan, but from a place of personal challenge. A once-thriving career was cut short by chronic health issues and disability. This unexpected turn left me feeling adrift, both financially and emotionally. It was during this difficult period that I found solace and renewed purpose by volunteering at a local food pantry.

Witnessing firsthand the struggles of families in rural areas, individuals are often overlooked, and their difficulty in accessing basic nutrition ignited a new calling. I realised the profound need for accessible, affordable food in these underserved communities. This experience became the catalyst for creating a mobile community pantry, bringing essential groceries directly to those who need them most. It’s a way to channel my experiences, skills, and empathy into creating a tangible difference in people's lives.

Bringing hope and nourishment

The Rural Plate Project aims to significantly reduce food insecurity within local communities. We achieve this by operating a mobile community pantry that brings low-cost, nutritious groceries directly to neighbourhoods with limited access to affordable food options. Our approach prioritises dignity, ensuring that everyone can access the food they need without stigma.

We are committed to reducing food waste by redistributing surplus food from suppliers and retailers. Furthermore, we strive to build strong community connections through valuable volunteering opportunities and collaborative partnerships. Our ultimate goal is to establish a sustainable, community-led food support programme that makes a lasting positive impact.

Our guiding principles

At the core of The Rural Plate Project are the values of empathy, community, and sustainability. We believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious food, and we are dedicated to serving those who face challenges in obtaining it. Our work is driven by a desire to connect with and support our communities, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual aid.

We operate with transparency and a deep respect for everyone we serve, ensuring a dignified experience for all. By redistributing surplus food, we contribute to a more sustainable food system, tackling waste while nourishing people. Our project is built on the belief that together, we can create a more equitable and food-secure future for our rural communities.
